Causes of Acne

Why do people get acne? Learn more about the causes of pimples and some insights on what can be done about this skin condition.

Overview on Acneacne face

Acne is a condition that arises once the hair follicles are blocked. This usually occurs when sebaceous glands are attached to these follicles. Eventually, these glands cause the hair that grows out of the follicles to be lubricated due to massive amounts of oil produced. With too much oil combined with dead skin cells, the follicle becomes blocked.

As the blocked follicle bulges in an outward motion, a whitehead is formed. This is the case with follicles that are close to the skin’s surface. On the other hand, blackheads are caused by plugged follicles open to the surface of the skin. When bacteria infect these follicles, cysts, nodules and pustules may form.

Causes of Acne

There are several possible causes of pimples. One of these is the production of too much testosterone, which is a hormone common during puberty. It is typical with teenage boys as the hormone stimulates development of testicles and penis. These hormones lead to negative reactions by the sebaceous gland. In fact, some studies show that elevated testosterone levels also lead to excessive production of oil, which is more than what is needed by the skin.

In females, those who get pimples are commonly in their adulthood. Changes in hormone levels cause pimples such as during pregnancy, the occurence of polycystic ovary synrome and menstrual period. Some other common issues that are linked with acne infestation in women include the use of oil-based makeup or skin care products with allergens, steroid medications, and smoking.

Some studies also show that acne may potentially run among families. For instance, if both of your parents suffered from pimples, you have a high chance of experiencing this condition, as well. However, this is likely to happen when conditions that contribute to acne production are present, at the same time, such as increased hormone levels, intake of medications that aggravate acne, smoking, stress, and use of skin care products or makeup that stimulate oil glands and block hair follicles.

What You Can Do

To avoid pimples, you can perform some techniques that will lead to clearer and more beautiful skin. Getting plenty of rest and sleep supports healthy skin as it allows your body to rest and give an opportunity for cells to regenerate. You should also consume foods that are nutrient-rich such as fresh fruits and vegetables. These food items contain antioxidants that help slow down aging while supporting the clarity, radiance and youthful glow of your skin.

When you suffer from pimples, it is best to consult an expert for proper treatment. You should visit your dermatologist for the right medication that works for your condition. Never use skin care products that are not suitable for your skin type since these may only worsen your pimples. Most importantly, keep your skin clean by using the right cleanser and moisturize it to prevent dryness that triggers irritation.
